WSOR 3801
Title:  WSOR 3801
Description:  WSOR GP38 3801 negotiates the curve as it takes the connector to the Prairie Sub. No cars today- this is probably just a run to the UW Heater coal burning plant to spot loads/retrieve empties

WSOR 3801
Title:  WSOR 3801
Description:  The 3801 returns from the Central Soya spur and passes over MX crossing, a diamond that's located in the middle of Monona Bay. I got really lucky with the timing and light in the shot, and why the hell not? It was my birthday! I'll also consider it a birthday present that I was not phoned in for tresspassing, but the throngs of die-hard tresspassing fisherman provide a good cover for a foamer.

WSOR 3801
Title:  WSOR 3801
Description:  The 3801 pulls a long string of UW-Heater bound coal loads, creating traffic problems as it crosses Blair St. The old CNW Blair St. station is just out of view to the left. The train parallels Lake Monona (right) and slowly approaches the "tunnel" underneath the famous Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Monona Terrace.

WSOR 3801
Title:  WSOR 3801
Description:  Peek-a-boo! The 3801 snakes around the sharp curve and across Dayton St., startling traffic that cannot easily see the train from the road. The use of train horns has been banned in Madison, but there would probably be several deadly accidents per year if the WSOR ceased using them at the UW Heater

WSOR 3801
Title:  WSOR 3801
Description:  3801 slices west through campus at another one of Madison's weird grade crossings. Mills and Dayton streets cross at a stoplight and the WSOR's Prairie sub cuts across the middle of the intersection at a 45 degree angle. Traffic can become quite congested here, especially when WSOR crews have to switch the UW-Madison coal heater plant

Title:  WSOR 3801
Description:  WSOR 3801 and the MALAM crew cross over MX, a diamond located in the middle of Monona Bay. It's a reasonably mild day (32) and the bay is packed with ice-fishers. I stood out like a sore thumb when I ran across the ice to get this and other photos.

Title:  WSOR 3801
Description:  The 3801 and MALAM crew pull a short train down a once-busy CNW main, crossing over a once-busy MILW main. WSOR now operates on both lines. The line the 3801 is using is used about 3 times per week whereas this portion of the ex-MILW line is used primarily for wye moves.

Title:  WSOR 3801
Description:  The WSOR provides the power for today's MABLT crew. They've backed some coal loads down the Freeport spur, staging them until the workers at the UW-Heater plant shove them inside with a front-end loader. The end of the Freeport spur holds about 6 or 7 cars.

Title:  WSOR 3801
Description:  The WSOR's 3801 is the power for the MALAM (Madison Area Local- AM job) today. I first caught them in the isthmus switching the MG&E coal plant (hence the empty hoppers in the photo), but they also had some covered hoppers and newsprint boxcars that suggest that the crew might have come from the Central Soya spur. Anyway, the crew is entering the yard from the Cottage Grove Sub wye because a couple Hi-rails are working on a switch on the main in the E. Johnson st. yard.

Description:  WSOR keeps air on the T6, WSOR's daily Madison to Janesville freight. 18 inches of snow fell in Madison on Wednesday, followed by several days of sub-zero temps and high winds. This Saturday, with the temps in the low 30s and abundant sunshine, was a welcome break.
