WSOR 3807
Title:  WSOR 3807
Description:  This little train is sitting out at MX behind a parked UP rock train (which is waiting for a passenger special to get further down the line). On what might ordinarily be a dead day for railfanning, MX is a parking lot for trains!

WSOR 3807
Title:  WSOR 3807
Description:  The train pauses alongside Vita Plus, one of two customers that is currently receiving cars on this line. Madison recycling used to get WSOR blue boxcars regularly, but it's been a while since I've seen crews spot a car there.

WSOR 3802
Title:  WSOR 3802
Description:  Having finished their switching duties at the UW Heater, the crew leads the 3802 and their short train west out of downtown Madison. Whereas many railfans have taken photos from the shaky pedestrian suspension bridge here, few have perfected it as has Matt Kuchta. Thus, this location is know to some (read:me) as Kuchta Curve.

Hitchin' a ride
Title:  Hitchin' a ride
Description:  The conductor radios information back to the engineer in WSOR 3802's cab as they back the train through the UW Heater plant and onto the Freeport spur. This grade crossing cuts diagonally across an intersection, a treacherous move that WSOR crews safely complete several times per week.

WSOR 3802 on M1
Title:  WSOR 3802 on M1
Description:  The M1 crew pulls their train back out into the wind and snow after passing under the Monona Terrace convention center. This crew just got finished switching the UW-Madison Heater plant on Charter street, and now they're taking empties back to WSOR's main yard in Madison at E. Johnson street. The MAJ passed through here about 20 minutes ago, going in the opposite direction. To the left (east) of the building is the frozen Lake Monona, and the 30mph winds out of the NE are doing a good job of flying across the lake and blasting snow onto my face while I take this picture.

WSOR 4054 & 2053 on MAJ
Title:  WSOR 4054 & 2053 on MAJ
Description:  Today's MAJ has SD40-2 4054 on the point for the trip back to Janesville. This unit is one of the WSOR's most recent acquisitions, and her coat of paint is less than a week old. Snow, 12 degree air and 30mph winds made this a rough shot to get.

WSOR 2051 and GCFX 3059 on JM
Title:  WSOR 2051 and GCFX 3059 on JM
Description:  The JM crew brings in their train with a lucky consist of 13 cars today. Its rush hour, and as the train parallels John Nolen drive (cutting off inbound vehicle traffic from reaching downtown destinations), morning traffic gets messy. Lucky for the motorists the train is only 13 cars long!

WSOR 2051 and GCFX 3059 on JM
Title:  WSOR 2051 and GCFX 3059 on JM
Description:  WSOR 2051 and GCFX 3059 are the power for today's JM train. The power is crossing the last of several bridges as the train comes off of the fill in Monona Bay. The line in the background to the right is WSOR's PDC line (which crosses the line this train is on in the middle of the Bay). The train will reach WSOR's E. Johnson street yard in a couple of miles where the Janesville-bound cars are waiting.

WSOR 10C on a Business Extra
Title:  WSOR 10C on a Business Extra
Description:  WSOR's business train pauses on the fill through Monona Bay, just past the diamond at MX crossing. This line is a former MILW passenger and freight line from Janesville/Milwaukee. The line it crosses in the background is a former CNW freight and passenger main, once part of CNW's Chicago-Twin Cities route. Both lines are now operated by the WSOR.

WSOR 2052
Title:  WSOR 2052
Description:  One of WSOR's Madison local jobs takes switches into the yard. The cars on the main (left side of photo) here at the Johnson street yard are a part of the MJ/JM train, which ordinarily arrives here in the early morning. Also visible in this shot are the 3808 and one of the cars WSOR uses on its business train.

WSOR 2053 at Jct A
Title:  WSOR 2053 at Jct A
Description:  With the conductor on board again, the engineer of this WSOR train eases 24 covered hoppers into motion. The train is snaking through Junction A on Madison's east side. I'm standing on a bike path and, though you can't see them in the picture, several walkers, bladers and bikers have paused to watch the train go by.

WSOR 2053 at Jct. A
Title:  WSOR 2053 at Jct. A
Description:  It's Sunday afternoon, and a WSOR crew takes 24 WSOR covered hoppers out the Waterloo line. This location is known as Junction A, and it's where the Waterloo line branches off from the Cottage Grove sub. The Waterloo line, ex-MILW, was once the route of the Milwaukee-Madison Hiawathas. The Cottage Grove sub was CNW's Milwaukee-Madison line. The WSOR now operates both lines.

WSOR 3806 and 2052 on M1
Title:  WSOR 3806 and 2052 on M1
Description:  The M1 crew gets reluctant permission from the yardmaster to pull their 15 empty INRD hoppers into the E. Johnson street yard. The yard is full of cars, the JM and M2 crews are both switching, and there's basically no place for the M1 to go... nahhh, there's always room!

Description:  The JM crew pulls a cut of WSOR sand hoppers out the north end of the E. Johnson street yard. The gondola to the right with the FRED hanging on the rear is the last car on the MJ train. WSOR 4001 & 4053 on MJ
Title:  WSOR 4001 & 4053 on MJ
Description:  The MJ crew cuts through a marshy area just after passing under the beltline on their way back home to Janesville, WI. The two SDs, as big as power comes on the WSOR, pull hard on 82 cars. The 4053's prior owner is obvious, but I wouldn't wait in earnest to see her in new red & silver paint anytime soon. The paint shop at WSOR's Horicon facilities is known for its quality work, and there's a backlog of contract work with other railroads to be done. The Horicon shop is full of foreign power waiting for a coat!

Morning Dew
Title:  Morning Dew
Description:  The JM crew is less than a mile from E. Johnson street and the WSOR's yard there. The sun had a brief stretch and yawn before pulling the cloudy covers back over its face this morning, evidenced by the barely visible capitol building in the background. The capitol looked amber in color less than 10 seconds before I took this shot, precisely why I came to this location. No biggie though... the 82-car train was a good enough show on its own.

WSOR 3806
Title:  WSOR 3806
Description:  Heat lines distort this view of 3806 backing down Madison Gas & Electric's spur in the isthmus. It's a hot one- high 80s and stuffy. The coal being spotted will eventually supply the demand for air conditioning on days like these. The crew has to rely on more conventional methods, like leaving the cab door open.
