UP 2999, 3300, 2954
Title:  UP 2999, 3300, 2954
Description:  A trio of UP units, including the United Way locomotive, lead a southbound UP ballast train across Monona Bay. The 3300 is a very welcome guest in Madison as the power on the UP rock trains from Rock Springs, WI usually does not change much over the summer. I can only hope that the stars and stripes return!

UP 2954
Title:  UP 2954
Description:  WSOR crews work UP ballast trains from Rock Springs, WI. The 60-some hoppers are loaded with the CNW's famous "Pink-Lady" ballast, so named for it's pinkish-purplish hue. The train is passing the site of Madison's Central Park. Progress on the park is impeded by the need to relocate the tracks, which are owned by the UP and leased to the WSOR. Unless the city can raise several million dollars to pay for the relocation, don't expect Central Park to look any different.

UP 2963
Title:  UP 2963
Description:  UP 2963 leads two other 40-2s on a SB Herzog ballast train through Madison, WI. The tracks are owned by the UP, but leased to and maintained by the Wisconsin and Southern Railroad. The tracks parallel John Nolen Drive as the train is about to travel under the famous Monona Terrace. The NB lanes are a testament to how a long, slow-moving train can cause bottlenecks in Madison's isthmus during rush hour.

UP 2964
Title:  UP 2964
Description:  Three UP SD40-2s lead a loaded ballast train across Monona Bay. The famous "pink lady" ballast came from the formerly CNW owned quarry at Rock Springs, WI. WSOR handles all switching operations on leased UP tracks in and out of Madison, but UP retains trackage rights to Rock Springs to access the ballast quarry. Madison sometimes sees newer, large GE and EMD power on the rock trains that dwarves the smaller SDs and GPs of the WSOR
