UP 2997 |
Description: |
A nose-bell equipped SD40-2 leads two sisters and a loaded ballast train along the Lake Monona shore (and makes a disaster of a traffic jam in the process). Just out of view to the left are some tennis courts scattered with tennis players holding their ears. The sound of rumbling EMDs and squealing flanges may be music to my ears, but I could see how it could bother some... ;-) |

UP 2964 |
Description: |
Three UP SD40-2s lead a loaded ballast train across Monona Bay. The famous "pink lady" ballast came from the formerly CNW owned quarry at Rock Springs, WI. WSOR handles all switching operations on leased UP tracks in and out of Madison, but UP retains trackage rights to Rock Springs to access the ballast quarry. Madison sometimes sees newer, large GE and EMD power on the rock trains that dwarves the smaller SDs and GPs of the WSOR |

UP 2980 |
Description: |
A WSOR crew brings this UP ballast train around the bend and through Madison's Isthmus. The green space to the left of the tracks is the future site of Madison's proposed Central Park. The plans include relocating the railroad tracks, a task easier said than done when you conisder that the UP owns the tracks. |

UP 2999, 3300, 2954 |
Description: |
A trio of UP units, including the United Way locomotive, lead a southbound UP ballast train across Monona Bay. The 3300 is a very welcome guest in Madison as the power on the UP rock trains from Rock Springs, WI usually does not change much over the summer. I can only hope that the stars and stripes return! |
